YOUNG PEOPLE OF THE PARISH
Catechism classes (For children attending non-Catholic Schools): These sessions are held on Saturday mornings (term time) 10.45am – 11.30am in the parish halls. Any children aged 4 to 8 years willing to learn or revise their understanding of the faith are welcome to attend. We start and end with prayer. The children learn the basic prayers with an explanation of their meaning and where we get them from e.g. references to the Bible. Readings from the Children’s Bible and explain why they were created, the reason for their baptism and what it means to belong to the family of God. If we have time the children will have a chance to do some drawings and colouring and a small piece of homework; fill in the blanks of a word search relating to what we have learnt at the session. The children have a walk around the inside of our lovely church where they learn about the sacramental signs and symbols, the right way to give reverence to God and genuflect. We go through parts of the Mass and explain the meaning of certain words and what it means to have grace. Please contact the parish office for further details 020 8672 2179.
Children's Liturgy: “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these” (Matthew 19: 14) Under 5s Group ‘The Little Fishes’ & Over 5s Group ‘The Followers’ St Anselm’s Church welcomes families, including babies and young children, especially at the Family Mass at 10am on Sundays. Sometimes babies and young children can get restless, and if they become noisy or start running about, this can disturb other worshippers. Parents are asked, if their children are becoming restless, to take them out of the church and into the foyer of the lower new hall or courtyard and once settled to return to the Mass. We offer liturgy sessions for ‘The Little Fishes’ Under 5s and ‘The Followers’ Over 5s during the readings, gospel, and sermon. For details, please see the parish newsletter and notice boards. Parents are asked to encourage their children to be quiet and reverent during the Mass. We ask parents to refrain from bringing hard or noisy toys into the church and liturgy groups. We also ask parents to encourage their children to be quiet and reverent during the Mass. It is a great pleasure to welcome families and their children into our parish liturgy, however there are a few points we would like you to observe: AIMS & OBJECTIVES · Introducing reverence · Introducing and conveying the message of the day’s gospel · An introduction to prayer · General introduction to the Mass · We ask parents/carers to remember that our liturgy sessions are an extension of the Mass and their behaviour will be copied by the children. There should be silence. · We ask that parents/carers absorb and continue with the message throughout the week, by completing the activity sheet and repeating relevant prayer. · We ask parents/carers to support their child and the adults leading the class, this will then have a profound effect on the spiritual growth of your child. · It is through the good humour, care, and friendliness of those our children meet they will realise how God loves them. · We ask you to refrain from bringing food or liquids into the church and into the liturgy groups and to refrain from bringing hard or noisy toys into the church and the liturgy groups. The Children’s Liturgy is held term-time only and takes place during the 10am Mass. It is an exciting and spiritual experience for all ages of our community. The liturgy groups are usually held on the 2nd & 4thSunday’s of the Month (and 5th Sunday when this occurs) when the children leave the church and attend their own liturgical experience in the new halls, an extension of the Mass. The Under 5s (Little Fishes) to be accompanied by a parent/adult go to the upper new hall via the doorway from the side of the Lady Chapel up the staircase to the upper hall and Over 5s (The Followers) go to the lower new hall, not necessarily accompanied by an adult via the rear door of the church to the courtyard and through the foyer of the new hall. From aged 7-8 years of age when children are part of the First Holy Communion programme, it is expected these children remain with their parents and follow the Mass in church. During the liturgy, the Gospel is read or acted out and the children interact through stories and songs. All the children return to the church at the end of the prayer of the faithful and some of the older children partake in the offertory procession of the gifts. We believe by providing this exciting and invigorating liturgical experience, the children under the age of 7 years and parents/carers are able to engage more fully with the Word of the Lord. Full details are available in the ‘Children at St Anselm’s’ leaflet found on the welcome table at the rear of the church. Liturgists are expected to have a knowledge and passion for the Word for the Lord and will have gone through the Parish Safeguarding procedure. Should you be interested in volunteering to be involved with this important ministry, please do get in touch with the parish office. HELPFUL INFORMATION For babies and very small children it may help to bring a book, we discourage toys of any sort, colouring books and crayons. Inevitability there will be times when the only thing to do is take the child out for a while and once settled return to Mass. By all means bring a bottle for a baby but please do not bring drinks or food. It is important for children to learn that the church is a place of worship and eating takes place elsewhere. Young children usually delight in stories and picture books and there are many such books available based on the Old and New Testament as well as simple Mass books. Sitting where a child can see what is going on and providing some suitable books can be a particularly good introduction even if at first the child can only manage half an hour or so. Better a good experience for a short time than an hour of fretting or fidgeting, which can be stressful for everyone. It’s usually best not to sit too near ‘best friends’ to avoid the temptation to chatter. PARENTS & CHILD LITURGY UNDER 5 LITURGY GROUP: THE LITTLE FISHES Who is it for? Guild of St Stephen (Altar Servers): Ever thought of deepening your faith? Do you want to do something different to help the parish? Do you like working in a team? Well, may be becoming an altar server is the thing for you! We have a long tradition of encouraging people to help and serve on the altar, assisting the priests and other clergy of the parish at Mass and other liturgical celebrations. Becoming an altar server is a wonderful way to deepen your faith, involve yourself in the life of the parish and become part of the team. Those who serve are committed to helping people to pray and ensure that our liturgical celebrations are carried out efficiently, giving praise and honour to God. We welcome all people of all ages, but before you start serving you will be asked to complete a basic training course. Altar servers work with candles and other sometimes heavy and sharp objects and this means health and safety is a priority and so the training helps ensure you are happy and safe as you about your takes on the altar. Further training and experience on the altar conclude with the award of the bronze-colour Guild of St Stephen Medal. In charge of altar servers is our Master of Ceremonies, John Pontifex, who works closely with the parish priest, Canon William Hebborn and the parish administrator, Martine Mercer. Each altar server is allotted a regular Saturday evening or Sunday Mass at which they will serve. We do encourage our servers to serve every week. Christmas and Easter are our busy times as are occasions with the Archbishop, Bishop visit to preside at special celebrations during the year. If you are in Year 5 and above and would like to support your parish in this important ministry, please get in touch with the parish office for further details.
Youth Music Ministry: The parish has had a long history of talented musicians and singers over the years. We are always looking for more members to join our choir especially the younger members of our parish, so whether you enjoy singing or playing an instrument why not find out more about what we do and have some fun! If you are interested please contact: the parish office tootingbec@rcaos.org.uk or Hannah stanselmstbecstreaming@gmail.com for further information.
Children at the Family Mass: We welcome and encourage parents to bring their children to Mass. By virtue of their Baptism children are members of the Church and should be encouraged to be involved in ways appropriate for their age. Our church is a sacred space, and all who gather are expected to help maintain an atmosphere of respect and prayerfulness. Children of all ages are welcome at Mass and it is important for parents and parish alike to enable children to grow in respect and understanding of the Gospel values. The aim should be to create a good experience for our children and young people. We recognise that it is not easy for small children to be quiet for a whole hour. So, we have included some suggestions here to help parents, along with information about Children’s Liturgy and Parent & Child Liturgy. Sharing in the sacrament of the Mass and the ritual can be a special time for you as parents to bond with your child. In normal circumstances families coming together have special opportunities for children and parents to share. We even have a wonderful post Mass cuppa/drink/ healthy eating (& often cake) which also creates a time of participation and creates our sense of God’s family. Even in the live streamed Masses many families have said how much they enjoy sitting down together and following the actions of the priest and sharing in the stories of the day. We are conscious that as well as attending Mass parents and guardians have a special duty to introduce their children to prayer and by their own model to encourage them to be reflective. Watching you thank your Lord for your food is the best example as is a prayer before bedtime. We consistently post on our website information about mental health awareness from the Catholic Education Services and are mindful of this area of children’s welfare at this time. We are also mindful that whether you attend as a nuclear family or in a different format – all are welcome to the house of the Lord. Music at Mass in the form of special songs that are family based is a powerful and stimulating force and you will soon learn the actions to many including “ Jesus Hands” spend some time watching out for those who get it wrong… It is often me!!! Good Friday: On Good Friday, the children of the parish have their own ‘Children’s Way of the Cross’ at 12noon in the church. The story of Jesus’ journey to Calvary is shared by the children in costume as they walk the 14 Stations, through readings, prayers, song, and reflection. At the conclusion, the priest blesses the children and all present following which all leave the church in reflective silence.
Mother’s Prayer Group: Time for reflection with Our Lady, model of joy and generosity. Mothers Prayers was formed to help those mothers who wished to pray together for their children and grandchildren and to find the support they need. Mothers of all ages are invited to the gathering which takes place on the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month straight after the 9am Mass in the Lady Chapel for half an hour. This is an opportunity to pray for all our children and share experiences. Children are also welcome! Please contact the parish office for further details.
Young Adults Group (18-35yrs): The Young Adults Group meets every Fourth Monday of the Month (except August). The evening begins at 7.15pm with Adoration and Benediction. This is followed by a talk on a spiritual topic, followed by a 'supper & social'.
